There are so many advertisements coming at you from every billboard, sign and screen these days that it can be difficult to separate the trustworthy ads from the mix. However, it’s sometimes easy to tell what ads you can and can’t trust if you know what to look for. Let’s use an example.
A Terrible AC Advertisement
At first glance, this ad looks like a joke. You might think, Seriously? Is this real? Once you realize that this is, in fact, a real AC repair ad, you’ll probably come to the conclusion that this HVAC repair company either has some serious ego issues or poor self-esteem. Let’s break down what’s wrong with this ad so you can spot problematic ads in the future.
The Technician
Let’s get one thing straight: models are not AC technicians. If the technician looks like this, the AC company isn’t showcasing their real technicians. What you see is not what you’ll get.
If an ad looks much more realistic, showcasing a technician or team of them that look much more realistic (i.e., not all models), you can bet that the company is proud of their technicians. This is a great sign.
Lack of Information
This ad uses the classic advertising strategy of attractive women to get your attention, which means that it’s not trying to use AC-related information to catch your eye. In fact, it’s trying to distract you from the fact that there’s no information about their services in the ad. A trustworthy ad will normally have a real selling point, to tell you why you should choose their services. These may include:
- A sale or special deal
- Popularity in the community
- Qualifications of their technicians
- A specific service
Choose Your Company Carefully
The point of advertising is to sell you something, and it’s your job to see through what’s fake or dishonest to find a service that you can trust. No matter who you choose for your AC services, make sure their ads don’t look like the one above!
