This demo was performed on one 4 ton single stage Trane XB12 system just outside the Heights area of Houston in Oak Forest, TX. A customer kindly offered these details off of their reliant electrical bill weekly summary after a Nest Learning Thermostat was installed on their home just north of West 43rd.
The nest learning thermostat – The “iPhone of thermostats” has several features that make the likes of White Rogers and Honeywell jealous. Among the best is the Auto-Away feature. When you are gone for an extended period your HVAC system will turn off and stay off until you return. Further still you can even train it to stay off during the work day and turn back on before you arive home from work allowing your home to be a comfortable temperature when you return home. Pretty neat.
Electric Bill Summary evidence proving nest learning thermostat works to save on Air Conditioning
If you look at the above chart you will notice last weeks and this weeks energy usage. This customer works at home and so their preference is to keep the temperature at even through the day and therfore the unit continues to work during the day time instead of being off. Their preferred temperatures are 74 degrees during the day and 72 degrees at night time. You’ll notice that usage consistently peaks in the afternoon. This is pretty average as ~3pm is typically the hottest part of the day.
Toward the end of the week you’ll see that the usage drops off the map just before noon. Any guesses why? Yes, Nest’s Auto Away feature. They went out of town for the weekend and the nest did them a favor and stopped their HVAC system from continuing to operate without them their. With the Smartphone app they could even turn their Air Conditioner back on before arriving home.
Yes I hear you, they only saved about $6 dollars. But consider that this is in just one week during a Houston’s milder fall temperatures. This is also just one of several energy saving features of the nest thermostat. Most HVAC systems in Houston Texas last 10-15 years. Thats 500+ weeks worth of opportunity for you to save money on your electrical bill.
