How much does it cost to run downton abbey?
Of course you have. Its the reason most people watch the show, right? OK, realistically then, how much money would I need to live like that? How much would you need to run the house? Just the house. I’ll show you….. sort of.
Ruud Design Star can estimate exactly how much you might spend on nearly any home. Design Star shows the estimated heating/cooling load and usage of the air conditioning, water heater, lights, and furnace throughout the year and therefore can estimate the ultimate utility costs. Sorry, but it cannot estimate costs for butlers and housemaids. I tried to pull up Highclere Castle (the actual downton abbey ) and DesignStar could not pull it up.
As a secondary option, I went local. What house for sale in Houston would be as close to Downton Abbey as possible? To do this I did a little search on HAR.com to see what houses might be for sale above $10 million dollars. I found three in the Memorial and river oaks areas.

Though the $16.9mm house was the most expensive it was not the largest. For this demo, I’ve chosen the biggest on 405 Timberwilde Ln. A modest 5 bedroom, 7 bath home equipped with a 6 car garage, wine vault, billiard room, in 16,414 square feet on 2.6 acres.

Total utility costs according to DesignStar are ~$17,000 annually. If that makes you blush, HCAD.org reports that the taxes are over $150,000/year.
Design Star doesn’t leave you hanging. They also give a proposed savings amount if the home is updated with the better windows, insulation, high efficiency air conditioning units and furnace, upgraded lighting etc.
